In February 2011, the Kentucky State Legislature passed Senate Bill 110 which allows optometrists, non-medical doctors, to perform certain eye surgical procedures after only a 32-hour course. The optometry argument was that rural areas were underserved by ophthalmology. Ironically, 85% of rural Kentuckians were against this legislation, including some optometrists! Sadly, 90% of our legislature voted "yes." Do you know the difference between an ophthalmologist and optometrist? Do you know how your elected officials voted? Ask them! Our optometrist and ophthalmologists understand that patient safety is important! Only the most appropriately qualified doctor will care for you at Georgetown Eye Care.
